The North Florida Freedom Schools (NFFS) was created in 2015 as a result of Kristal Moore Clemons’ and Keely Norris’s shared past experiences working with the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools®.
CDF’s Freedom Schools® program grew out the work of the historic 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi when free alternative schools were organized during the Civil Rights Movement with the goal of achieving equality. Clemons and Norris, in collaboration with Roehrig, wanted to provide an opportunity for children in the Tallahassee and Gadsden County communities to participate in quality summer enrichment programs.
NFFS’s two 2018 summer camp sites will serve K-8 students from low-income households on Tallahassee’s south side, who will have the opportunity to be Freedom School scholars. Select high school aged students will have the opportunity to be junior servant leader interns, assisting servant leader interns (teachers) with program activities and mentoring scholars. Servant leader interns are college students or recent graduates. Scholars will receive all meals free.
